My father's side of the family has been recently calling me, inviting me to my grandmother's (on my father's side) birthday party on Sunday. I have no allegiance, no love, or any emotional attachment to that side of the family. I would say that it might be polite to go to the party, but honestly, I'm old enough now that I don't have to do anything I don't really want to do. OK, that might not be entirely true, but certainly I can make my own decisions now. If I really don't want to go I should be able to make that decision and not go.
